When the house suddenly shakes even though there is no earthquake or wind,
it is said that yokai YANARI are playing tricks on it. In “Taihei Hyakumonogatari,”
a book written in the Edo period (1603-1867), there is a story about a house that suddenly
shook late at night, and a monk investigated and found a YANARI.

地震も風もないのに突然家が揺れるのは、妖怪のヤナリが悪戯していると言われている。
江戸時代に書かれた『太平百物語』には、ある家が深夜に突然揺れたので、
僧侶が調べたところ家鳴りがいた、という話が載っているのだ。
