Yokai Tesso 妖怪 鉄鼠
鉄鼠は、平安時代の僧の怨霊が鼠の化け物となったものと言われている。
『源平盛衰記』によると、この僧の怨霊が後に巨大なネズミとなり、延暦寺の経典を食い荒らしたという。
この僧の怨霊に恐れをなした延暦寺は、東坂本に神社を建立し、鉄鼠を神として祀り、僧の怨霊を鎮めることにしたのである。
以後この神社は「ねずみの隠れ里」と名づけられたという。
About Yokai Tesso
Tesso, or iron rat, is said to be the vengeful spirit of a Heian-period Buddhist monk who became a rat monster.
According to “Genpei Seikatsuki,” the monk’s grudge later turned into a giant rat and devoured the scriptures of Enryaku-ji Temple. Enryaku-ji was so frightened by the monk’s grudge that it built a shrine in Higashisakamoto and enshrined Tesso as a deity to appease the monk’s grudge.
The shrine was later named “Nezumi-no-Hokura” (“Rat’s Hidekura”).
